CLE Events | Event Date: Thursday, November 9, 2017

November 2, 2017

NAM (National Arbitration and Mediation) is proud to announce that Hon. Peter B. Skelos has been invited by the Suffolk County Bar Association (SCBA) Academy of Law in conjunction with the SCBA Matrimonial Committee to present a 75-minute CLE presentation entitled Mediation and Arbitration: Alternatives to Litigation of Matrimonial Matters. The program will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Suffolk Academy of Law, 560 Wheeler Road, Hauppauge, NY 11788 from 12:45 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Judges, lawyers and especially litigants complain that matrimonial litigation takes too long and costs too much. With no decrease in the divorce rate likely, it is clear that the delay that is now endemic in matrimonial actions will not abate. Hon. Skelos' will address the use of mediation and arbitration as a less expensive, more time-efficient, and ultimately more client-acceptable alternative to the resolution of matrimonial matters in the courthouse. Topics to be discussed will be arbitrate versus litigate; the advantages of matrimonial arbitration (privacy, confidentiality and finality); selecting a neutral: pre-trial discovery; setting a hearing timetable; and drafting the arbitration contract.

Hon. Peter Skelos was voted a Top Ten Neutral by the 2017 New York Law Journal Annual Reader Rankings Survey for the second year in a row. He was also named a National Law Journal 2017 Alternative Dispute Resolution Champion, as part of a select group of only 37 nationwide and was also chosen as a 2017 New York Super Lawyer. Judge Skelos is a former Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, 2nd Department. He is well-versed in the law and is a highly regarded arbitrator and mediator for NAM. Hon. Skelos hears a wide variety of case types including matrimonial, construction, commercial, professional liability, insurance coverage, medical malpractice and personal injury matters.

Judge Skelos will be joined by Stephen W. Schlissel, Esq., a matrimonial and family law attorney and founding member of Schlissel Ostrow Karabatos PLLC. He is also certified as an arbitrator by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
